The Restaurant JAN journey has always been one of surprises. The location of the restaurant itself was the result of a serendipitous moment.
The idea was always in the back of my mind to open a restaurant, to serve guests food inspired by my native country, and to showcase how our methods have evolved over time to become something we can call our own.
JAN, an intimate 20-seater restaurant in Nice’s Old Port district, takes guests on a culinary exploration using only local and seasonal ingredients from surrounding farms on the Cote’d Azur. Growing up on a farm in Middelburg, a town in the northern reaches of South Africa, this approach was our way of life, and a passion that informed the concept for Restaurant JAN from the start. Here, the idea of adapting and serving South African favourites like melktert, bobotie, biltong and other dishes to discerning culinary audiences in Europe was born. As a tribute to my homeland and a nod to my adopted city, the JAN team constantly strives for contrasts between flavours, origins and cultures through a mix of French and South African cuisine.

5 months agoA high quality, unique dining experience. Dinner lasted ~3 hours. We opted for the signature course + non-alcoholic pairings. Food: Although there were 2 dishes and 1 pairing which were not for me, the food was otherwise delicious and of exceptional quality. The lobster dish and cod dish were phenomenal. Personally not really into cheese, but the cheese room was a unique experience and a nice break in the meal. Service: Flawless. Staff were attentive, polite, and accommodating. Truly Michelin standard level of service. They even gave us a cookbook to bring home as a souvenir (pictured above). Atmosphere: The atmosphere was intimate, although the volume level does get a bit loud; we found ourselves raising our voices to hear each other at one point (some may not mind this). Overall, would recommend JAN!

6 months agoThis restaurant had the best service I've ever had. The staff were so kind and had knowledge on every dish and wine served. They gave us a bowl to wash our hands which had a lovely aroma and every time we finished a course, they would remove the crumbs off our table. The food is very different to what I had before, very innovative and it all goes so well and taste so flavourful. We also got to go to the cheese room which was a delightful experience too. We left so satisfied and we will come back here when were back in Nice.

4 weeks agoThe pinnacle of our culinarily journey! We are truly blessed to be able to dine at this world class restaurant! JAN has been awarded a Michelin star for 9 consecutive years! ⭐️ And now we know why this accolade is bestowed upon JAN. The fabulous sophisticated classy decor, snow white table cloths, the Baccarat and Riedel glasses, unique plates and crockery with silver Christofel cutlery just adds to the wonderful ambiance of JAN. We opted for the signature menu and it was a wonderful choice. The balance of flavors and presentation is mind boggling! No salt & pepper or other condiments on a dining table means the chef knows his craft. Exquisite 👌🏻 The staff are expertly trained and add to the wonderful overall experience. Jan personally came to greet us and he shared stories and very exciting news … all will be revealed in due course. What a lovely, classy, friendly, well mannered and spontaneous down to earth person Jan is. Legend! Totally in a class of his own 🥂🍾 Baie dankie Jan dit was voorwaar ñ onvergeetlike ervaring! Safe travels tomorrow ✈️🇿🇦 Merci beaucoup! 🇫🇷

4 months agoWe dined at Jan in Nice, and it truly lived up to its Michelin-starred reputation, offering an exceptional dining experience. As a South African now living in Europe, it was refreshing to enjoy bold South African flavors once again. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, with robust flavors that stood out. A standout dish for me was the deconstructed bobotie, which was both innovative and full of flavor. Another highlight was the “Kaas en Konfyt Kamer,” an intriguing experience where we crossed the street to a separate room dedicated to tasting a variety of cheeses. Overall, it was a memorable and impressive meal.

7 months agoMichelin star restaurant featuring French + South African cuisine! It was beautiful. The space is amazing, the food was balanced & delectable. One of the courses they take you to the cheese room which is amazing because you can pick from 30+ cheeses. We did the french / South African wine pairing which was great. Overall amazing. Was about €500~~ for 2 people
